Protect Your Home (DEFENDERS subsidiary) started with the same passion – and our first customers – in 1998. Each year, we support community involvement by encouraging employees to apply our “team” passion for helping local organizations. We call the corporate giving program our SUPER SERVICE CHALLENGE.

Employee groups of 5-10 team members choose a local 501(c)3 charity or nonprofit organization and propose a service project. Five projects receive funds from the company to support organizations with initiatives that help improve the quality of life for individuals and families.

Our History: Humble Beginnings

Protect Your Home Founder

The Protect Your Home story began in 1998 with founder Dave Lindsay’s vision and a small group, working from an in-home office, that turned determination, perseverance, imagination and teamwork into a recognized, world-class home security company. Today, more than 2,000 team members in 128 branch offices, a sales center, and a national corporate headquarters mark the success of a rapidly growing company that still depends on entrepreneurialism, team spirit, drive, and integrity.

We are especially proud of team members who, year after year, prove that the ingredients for success, even from humble beginnings, live in anyone who understands dedication and believes in success. Our team includes custodians and construction workers who have become leading sales producers. Our ranks feature regional sales managers who began as engineers. Protect Your Home is a place where people reinvent themselves, stay true to their passions, and achieve personal goals.

Vision is a Powerful Motivator

By September 1998, Dave’s group had grown to 10 people learning the home security ropes. Productivity picked up nicely as monthly sales increased from six security systems to 15, and then to 30. Dave looked for and found a business-building catalyst – something the team could focus on together – in an ADT incentive program. The one-month “Best Over-Quota Contest” offered a $15,000 prize for the dealer that outperformed its previous three months of sales. Dave calculated that quota at 17 units.

At that point, selling really took over the house. The living room became the Sales Meeting War Room. A sales-tracking board took the place of artwork. And an entertainment center served as an employee mail center. This is also when a bed became a desk for administrative paperwork, complete with a PC and a scavenged fax machine. The front lawn frequently hosted meetings and training sessions.

They were entrepreneurs, setting their own rules and selling boldly because they believed in protecting as many families as possible with a great security product. Just like today, the team went after their objectives together, encouraging each other and tapping into the group energy. Dave had a good feeling about coming out on top in the ADT competition.

At the contest midpoint, Dave checked with ADT headquarters fully expecting his high-powered team to be among the top performers. Instead, he learned his contest quota – as a new dealer – was 45. Nearly three times the original target of 17 systems. Dave recalls feeling quite alone although the team was just in the next room, planning on another day of wins. How would they respond to moving goal line?

He decided it was a good problem to have after only a few months in business. They had a chance to win a national sales contest. So the real question seemed to be: Was the challenge bigger than them, or were they bigger than the challenge?

The answer came in the form of two weeks of even harder selling. Tripling the installation crew ensured that everything they sold was installed the following day. At the end of 30 days, Protect Your Home had won 142 new customers. They exceeded the contest quota by 316%, topped their three-month historical average by 835%, and headed to Denver for the annual ADT convention and the top prize among 350+ dealers nationwide.

During the next few years, a growing team set and achieved other goals like winning the $15,000 check that made Protect Your Home a top member of the ADT Dealer Program. The second office opened just 60 days after the contest, sold 125 security systems in its first month. Driven by the vision to add a new location every three months, the company closed out the first year with four offices.

Dave had watched his teammates win because they believed in the “focused passions and dreams” they brought to Protect Your Home. There is a long list of team members who, like the original group, reinvented themselves because they committed to a vision. The engineer who not only took a chance on Sales management but excelled as a regional manager. A top sales person for all of ADT was a former custodian who joined Protect Your Home. Someone told a construction tradesman that Sales was not in his future. He didn’t stop at becoming a top home security rep, he became a top branch manager. Frustration as a salesperson didn’t stop a team member from trusting her skill set and building her own branch.

Today, the $15,000 that Dave and the team won in 1998 is not a big number. There is nothing more significant, however, as a symbol of the vision- and team-driven culture that Protect Your Home will always use to help customers find the home security solution that is best for them.
