These are far more often used in office and residential settings.

Although surface contacts are more expensive, the price difference is typically minute. Most are willing to pay the small difference in order to upgrade to an “invisible” contact with a recessed option.

An additional option you can find on the market that is closely related to a surface contact is a garage door contact. The difference is the sensor is typically installed onto the floor and the magnetic portion is installed on the garage door. In order to protect the sensor from vehicles rolling over it, it is encased in steel.

If you do have sliding windows in your home, you are best off using standard magnetic contacts while you want to use a standard or button glass-break detector for casement windows. The reason for this is because casement windows are extremely difficult to open without breaking the glass.
