What Options Do You Have For Motion Sensors?

Motion sensors can be highly effective in protecting your home from burglars. The sensors work to detect any movement within the area the device covers. With different kinds of sensors, you will find that each works differently while creating the same results.

The first kind of motion sensor you can install in your home is a microwave sensor which bounces microwaves off of an object. It then measures the frequency of the waves that return. Fortunately, if the object is moving it will still send back microwaves, just in a differing frequency.

Microwave sensors do have a greater range of coverage than the other type of sensor, infrared sensors, and are much more reliable further away. These sensors are extremely powerful as they are capable of penetrating walls, which creates more options for where you can place them since they can be hidden behind objects.

As with anything, there is a downside to this type of sensor. While it is nice to have a sensor that is effective with alerting you of intruders, microwave sensors are extremely sensitive.

They are often susceptible to electrical devices nearby like lightning, radios or even the television. The good news is your installer can alter the sensitivity of your sensors to make it work best in your area.

The alternative option to microwave sensors is infrared sensors. This is by far the most common type of sensor found in homes because they are typically cheaper and more reliable. This sensor works by using the infrared light spectrum, which consists of invisible light originating from a heat source.

The sensor will measure the head of an object passing by in order to compare it with the heat of nearby objects like a wall. One of the downfalls you will find with this type of a sensor is that it will not cover an entire room. It only manages to cover a scanned area thus limiting the amount of protection you get.

Fortunately, there is a way to improve this drawback by using different lenses. You can choose from different lenses depending on where you will be scanning in order to increase the amount of distance covered.

Lastly, there are dual technology sensors that combine the features of the different motion sensors in order to enhance the reliability. Over time they have become increasingly popular because of the fact they reduce false alarms.

They do so by combining different facets of each of the motion sensors taking the penetration capabilities of microwaves and heat sensing properties of infrared.
