Home Burglary – Valuables Do Not Stay Hidden
Last updated: March 23, 2018
You always want to protect your home from being burglarized, but that is not always an easy task, which is why you need to hide your valuables well. Keep in mind that the places you feel are extremely secure are actually the first areas of the home a burglar will target. You have to remember burglars earn their living by stealing, so they need to be as witty as possible.
Books are not Just for Reading
You may have a case full of books, but that will not stop a burglar from inspecting the shelf for money, hidden wallets and or credit cards. It only takes a burglar a split second to turn that entire case over. When a book is turned upside down, all of the contents will fall out. Burglars are also aware of the book trick where the middle of the book is removed to hold your money or other valuable items. It is best to find another hiding place because books are a sure target.
Food Boxes and Pantries
Thanks to the world of television and literature, burglars know to search your pantry for empty food boxes. You may think that a burglar does not have time to go through every box in your pantry, but you would be surprised how many actually do. Burglars will notice the difference between half-full boxes of cereal, in comparison to a box full of money.
A good place to hide your valuables is in the freezer or refrigerator. Burglars may go through an empty cereal box, but they are less likely to go through every single bowl of leftovers or food that is wrapped in aluminum foil. If you want to use an empty container to hold money, you will have better luck deceiving a burglar if you use an empty shampoo or shower gel bottle to hide valuables. Be careful, because the contents of the package could ruin the money, your jewelry, or other cherished items.
Helpful Hint
When you hide your valuables from burglars, do not forget where you placed the items. It is best to keep some type of coded system that will remind you where the items are. You do not want to misplace money and think you were robbed when in actuality, you forgot where you hid the money at. When you make a list or coded system, make sure, the wording is something only you will know. In addition, it is best to place this list – and valuable items – inside a bolted down safe.
Even if you hide your valuables, you cannot guarantee a burglar will be fooled by your hiding places. It is best to have a home security system installed, so your property is monitored 24 hours a day, even when you are asleep, or not at home. If a burglar breaks into your house, authorities are notified immediately, and the burglar is more likely to run away when the alarm goes off than those who enter a home without a security system.
